A graffito of a harpy reproducing another one visible in the film “The Passion of Joan of Arc” by Carl Theodor Dreyer.
Harpies are Greco-Roman deities of devastation and divine vengeance. The appearance of this drawing in the stripped-down setting of Dreyer's film has, to Steve Giasson's knowledge, never been commented on. However, Dreyer seems to establish an anachronistic parallel between the “Maid of Orléans” and the harpies.
In the eyes of the artist, it also seems to suit our times.
